Some underwriters like the easy life; cast iron credits, easy assets, tick in the box, done. Not so UTB’s Charlotte Fenton. While she’ll happily do her fair share of simpler flow deals, It’s the trickier mid-ticket and larger loans that get her out of bed in the morning.
Charlotte joined UTB’s Asset Finance team in 2018 having previously worked at Macquarie, Citibank, CIT and Universal Leasing. Here she explains why UTB is a great choice for brokers with story deals and shares her top travel pick for sunshine, rainforests and caipirinhas on the beach. |
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The people and the variety. No two days, or deals, are the same and I love the fast-paced nature of the job. I enjoy talking to brokers and the UTB Asset Finance team are simply the very best team I have worked with.
What makes a solid deal?
A strong, long-established customer, profitable financials, great bank statements, sound asset, and good equity position… but how boring is that to underwrite! Give me the juicy ones any day of the week!
What does UTB do that can really help a broker secure a deal?
We are happy to discuss deals directly with the broker, so if you have a story, or a quirky deal, we can talk it through to consider all the angles and we’ll do our best to come up with a positive decision and a solution that works for everyone. Happy customer, happy broker, happy Bank.
3 top tips when presenting a HVC deal to UTB
1) Give us your background to your history with the client. It’s a useful piece of knowledge for an underwriter.
2) For modified or more bespoke assets, an underlying invoice and quote will always help our external valuers to give the customer the best possible asset valuation.
3) For mid-size deals and exposure of around £150k plus, please check and request the FULL (not abridged or abbreviated) accounts if they are not available to download from Companies House.
Charlotte Fenton Q&A
Memorable personal moment – It has to be winning a UTB ‘Go Further’ Award in October ’24 with my very own mug as the prize!
Favourite place you’ve visited – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I travelled there in February ’24 and absolutely loved every single second. Beaches, city, rainforest, sunshine, and caipirinhas, had me sold!
Favourite film – This would be my chance to offer something gritty and meaningful… but nope… Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. I Never get bored of it.
Last book you read – In Pursuit of Happiness – Mating, Marriage, Motherhood, Money, Mayhem – By Stacey Duguid. It’s chaotic, raw, brave, and very funny.
Favourite pastime or passion – As many live music events as I can squeeze in, from day parties like Clockwork Orange, Fat Tony and Dirty Promotions, to festivals and concerts, including Stereophonics, Oasis (I GOT THE BALLOT!), and Chase & Status all coming up in the next few months.
